Recovery

Sorry for the absence. October was a busy month

Let's get this blog going again.

The digital painting below is a color study for an acrylic painting I recently completed:

These little guys are off-model sketches of the 1941 KU Jayhawk. They were commissioned as inspiration for a KU-themed tattoo.

Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey thumbnails

Some preliminary sketches for a commissioned piece I'm working on.

Each sketch is around 2" x 3". I think doodles are just as beautiful if not more so than the final piece.

Sketching Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs is fun to draw because of his simple yet iconic appearance. He's a ready-made cartoon character, really.

Various sketches with commentary

After he passed, I watched his Stanford Commencement Address. I lifted a line from his speech and combined it with the final drawing from above, and made a little inspirational wallet card.

It's a little dinged up from sliding in and out of my wallet

Doodle magic

This little thumbnail doodle took me all of two minutes, but it has more personality and dynamism than most of my finished work. Why can't all stages of the artistic process be this spontaneous and intuitive? WHY?

Impromptu painting

Sometimes, I go on an art binge and vomit something out that I had no intention of creating. Last night was one of those times. All of this took place within two hours.

Here's the reference material. I'm trying to find the image's original source so I can give credit where it's due...

Here's the warm up pen sketch:

The pencil sketch on a 2x2' gessoed board of birch plywood:

The final product about an hour later:

I don't usually lay paint down this thick. I was kind of in a frenzy while creating this:

Towards the end, I ditched my palette knife; can you can see the grooves left by my fingerprints?

Work sketchin'

Today's "Process Analytics" meeting was wildly successful! There's a little something for everyone:

Here's a concept sketch for my friend's website, currently in development, PuzzleBuggle:

Some color studies:

*Oops! There's some color inconsistency with the lower part of the pencil. I'll fix that later.

Top Secret

The evolution of a logo for a project I'm not at liberty to discuss (I've always wanted to say that):

Business cards

I worked on designing some business cards for myself yesterday.  Here is the process from start to finish:

The resulting two:

I decided to go with the light bulb one.
